Despite certain environmental and safety issues associated with the use of coal, today coal remains the most abundant and inexpensive energy source. A large percentage of the daily electricity is generated by coal and coal is still used in many industrial productions, most noticeably in the steel industry.
Coal mining is very capital intensive, producing average annual revenue of $300,000 per employee and the industry itself is highly concentrated with smaller companies supplying only local customers on fixed long-term contracts. The U.S. has the largest coal reserves in the world and is one of the main coal exporters.

There are many times more of coal mining and coal related operators than publicly traded companies. The number of coal mining stocks listed in all U.S. markets, both open exchanges and over-the-counter systems, are close to 40. Market size varies across all cap categories, but the mega cap(over $200 billion).
The majority of the sub-small cap stocks (below $300 million), namely micro caps and nano caps, are thinly traded on OTC markets, either the Bulletin Board or the Pink Sheets. Whenever there is no active price quoting and trading on a particular company in such a OTC market, its market cap becomes unknown as it can not be determined and represented.
