Mining is a dangerous career but it can also be quite rewarding. It is not unusual for individuals who work in mining to remain in their jobs for decades and build a great camaraderie with their coworkers. These mining groups and their families can become very close knit, sharing in each other’s highs and lows. A person does not need to have a lot of experience in order to break into this career because there are many entry level mining jobs available.
Basic reading and writing skills are a prerequisite for each of these jobs but they require little to no previous relevant work experience. Some jobs require that an incumbent have a high school diploma and this information will be listed in the classified ad and job description. There are jobs for different levels of interest within the mining industry.
A laborer moves, loads, and cleans up at the work site, while a janitor or dryman keeps the mine clean. Those interested in explosives can get a job as a blast helper, who helps to load the explosives into the drill holes and makes sure that the location is safe before blasting occurs. If drilling is the fascination, a driller’s assistant handles the drill core and helps to move and operate the drill.
Those with a more scientific background may be drawn to a job as a geophysical assistant or sampler. A geophysical assistant operates relevant equipment and records data. A sampler collects samples of ore for testing purposes. There are also helper positions for the electrician, surveyor, and mechanic. Each job involves assisting with duties performed by these professionals.
Individuals who are interested in operating equipment should look for a position as a crusher, grinding, floatation, reagent, dewatering, or general equipment operator. Each plays a key role by operating machinery that is essential to the mining process. People who prefer a more hands off role should explore careers as a cook’s helper or warehouse worker.
