The techniques and processes required to remove gold from the ground are referred to as gold mining. There are hundreds of active gold mines located throughout the world and many others that are currently abandoned. Extracting this precious metal from the earth is done via several techniques that require the use of gold mining equipment.
Panning for gold is a manual method of sorting gold and it requires the use of gold panning equipment. A shallow, wide pan is filled with gravel or sand that possibly contains gold. This pan is submerged in water and is then shaken so the gold will fall through to the bottom of the pan. Gold panning is commonly done at the inside turn of a stream or on the bedrock of the stream where gold tends to concentrate. Panning is generally not a cost-effective technique for commercial entities that extract gold from large deposit areas.
Using a metal detector, individuals can walk throughout an area and scan below its surface for gold. The sensor in the detector will emit a positive reading when gold is detected as far as one meter below surface level. Gold miners frequently use this device because it is mobile and easily operated.
An alternative mining method is sluicing, which requires using a sluice box in placer deposits. This box is an artificially-created channel containing riffles in its bottom. The riffles form dead zones within the current, allowing the gold to drop out of the water’s suspension. Miners place sluice boxes in a stream to channel the flow of water. Material that contains gold is put into the top of the box and the current carries it through the box. The gold will settle behind the riffles and the less dense materials will flow out of the box. Dredging involves using floating sluice boxes, supported by pontoons, attached to suction hoses.
Gold panning kits, metal detectors, sluice boxes, and dredging machines are a few of the most common pieces of gold mining equipment. Excavators are other machines commonly used in large-scale dredging projects. Most commercial gold mining equipment is expensive and the manufacturing of these items represents big business.
