Futures are contracts to buy or sell a commodity at a fixed price sometime in the future — in this case, we’re discussing silver futures. All Futures contracts are standardized to facilitate trading. These contracts include details such as quality, quantity, future transaction date, sale price, and delivery location.
Futures contracts have two positions that investors can take:
- Short. The party purchasing the asset in the future and benefiting from an asset price decrease during the contract term is known as the short position.
- Long. The party selling the asset in the future and benefiting from an asset price increase during the contract term is known as the long position.
Silver Futures Fundamentals
Silver, copper, natural gas, gold, and interest rates are examples of things that can have futures contracts associated with them. If the underlying asset is silver, then it is a silver future.
Where to Trade Silver Futures Fundamentals
Like gold, silver futures are sold on two exchanges, in dollars and cents, and with delivery specified to vaults in New York.
1. Available on a division of the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) known as the Commodity Exchange (COMEX): 5,000 ounces, and
2. Available via electronic trading on the Chicago Board of Trade eCBOT: 5,000 ounces and a mini contract of 1,000 ounces.
The Basic of How to Trade Natural Gas Futures
There are three ways to trade futures:
1. You complete your own trades. You have your own account and do not rely on a broker for assistance in either research or trading. This method has the most risk.
2. Your broker trades for you. You have the support of a broker’s experience, knowledge, research, and analysis. They also perform the trades based on parameters you provide.
3. A group broker trades for the group. This is structurally similar to a mutual fund, the least risky, and the most diversified approach.
Of course, silver futures are risky and include a lot of speculation. I suggest most readers to consider silver stocks or silver coins as an alternative investment, especially for novices.
